California voters passed Prop 22 allowing gig-economy companies (like Uber and Lyft) to classify workers as independent contractors. It's a benefit to the companies as well as allowing workers the choice to work how they want.
The proponents for the bill feel this is a huge win for digital platforms while its opponents see it as money "being stolen from drivers by virtue of the misclassification.
After a very expensive campaign, the voters decided overwhelmingly that drivers should remain independent.
